History of Yajooj (Gog ) and Majooj (Magog)

Yajooj (Gog ) and Majooj (Magog)

Yajooj and Majooj, known in English as Gog and Magog, are the two most famous personalities of the Islamic end of time or the last days. They also base their arguments on divine revelations, eschatology, and the agency of light victorious over darkness. The status of consultative authority and responsibility of Muslims is explicitly spelled out in the Holy Quran and the Hadith regarding the story of Yajooj and Majooj.

Quranic References

The Quran introduces Yajooj and Majooj in Surah Al-Kahf (18:(83–99). The surah includes verses of the story of a virtuous and mighty king, Dhul Qarnayn. Verse 17 narrates the story in such a manner that reveals Allah has endowed Dhul-Qarnayn with the authority to ride on the earth to encounter nations. In one of the journeys, he gets to a people who are under attack by Yajooj and Majooj, and the people are suffering from this destruction.

Quranic References

Surah Al-Kahf (18:94–98):

“They said: ‘O Dhu’l-Qarnayn, verily Gog and Magog are a people causing great mischief on the earth, so shall we invest in payment for you to separate us from them? ‘ As to the provision which my Lord has assigned for me, it is better for me than what you offer; but bring me strength, then I shall erect a rampart between you and them. ’

It is, therefore, inconsequential to question why people assisted Dhul-Qarnain to erect this great barrier with an iron and copper block. This barrier is to lock up Yajooj and Majooj and not let them out until the day of judgment arrives; this indicates that the day of judgment is imminent.

gog and magog

Surah Al-Anbiya (21:96–97):

Till the Gog has been opened and they came down from every highland; and when the true promise has been fulfilled, lo, the eyes of those who disbelieved shall be staring; [and they say:] ‘Alas for us! Nay, indeed, we were counting, and we were certainly wrong. ’

[Anonymous]. (2021, October 8). The biblical tale of Gog and_MAGOG

This passage reveals that the transformation of Yajooj and Majooj is among the signs of the impending Day of Judgement for the believers.

Hadith References

There are more narrations from Hadith regarding people like Yajooj and Majooj, and the people explain the other facts about their nature, effect, and position on the emergence of such a type of people.

gog and magog

Sahih Muslim:

Anas ibn Malik also told us that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) informed us that Yajooj and Majooj would be an army of very long people. He quoted that after the slaying of the Antichrist (Dajjal), Allah will give glad tidings to Jesus (Isa) that Allah has created those whom none can wage war against them — Yajooj and Majooj. Jesus and the believers will go to Mount Sinai to pray and sacrifice themselves to be aided.

gog and magog

Sahih Muslim (2937):

“And then, Allah will throw Gog and Magog into the land, and they will descend from every ravine. ”The first of them will pass the Lake of Tiberias and drink its water, and when the last of them passes, he will say: For what is said as ‘There was once water here.’ The people of the village that follow Jesus Christ and the angels will be attacking Jesus and his friends until the head of the bull will accept more than one hundred dinars. Jesus the Prophet and his friends will pray for Allan’s mercy, And Allan will send worms into the necks of (Gog and Magog) when they wake up.

It suggests that Yajooj and Majooj have many enemies and lust for something that indicates their annihilation. However, they also focus on the potential risks, and for people, the emphasis is always on the belief that only Allah can save them from these evils.

Sahih Bukhari (3346):

This is the narration of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) on the authority of Abdullah Ibn Amr: “The Yajooj and Majooj are the creatures of Allah The Almighty, and He opened a small gap of them like this,” she gestured in the air with the thumb and index finger to depict a circle. Zainab bint Jahsh also narrated that she said to the Prophet: Our nation will perish even though there are righteous people among us? To this, the Prophet replied: Yes, if there is an increase in evil. From this hadith, it can be said that even the openings within the barrier can be huge, and it shows that Yajooj and Majooj will appear one day. It also conveys a moral lesson: To a person’s surprise, even if there are many good people, as well as the number of good deeds and good people in the society, the society will unfortunately be influenced negatively.

Yajooj and Majooj in Islamic texts is a weird but powerful tale that can be interpreted to possess a robust theological and ethical significance in Islam. As the injunctions to the people they represent, the power in this world is unstable and will eventually shift to the sovereignty of God. The knowledge teaches reliance on prayer and god ability to act, especially concerning disasters beyond man’s expectations. Also, the Code reads that Muslims should reflect on the Prophetic nightmares and, therefore, have something to be aware of the upcoming apocalypse. They also emphasize the concept of individuals coming together and adhering to certain principles due to issues that may emanate from the decline of specific cultures. They also address the challenges associated with certain Judgment Day tests. Today, the story of Yajooj and Majooj is not told for nothing, as only the Muslims are of any benefit in this world. It is generally believed to be an allegory; Yajooj and Majooj are supposed to represent evil; there are many attempts by scholars to understand the inferences of the behaviors of those two tribes as the contemporary evils that the world is facing today, including greed, corruption, rebellion, and pollution. It also gives knowledge, oneness, and readiness to handle international evils if one is not left naked with expertise. They can receive main lessons from the story that assist them in reviving hope, which helps them strengthen their faith and work for justice and cooperation for a better future.
